Gas Versus Electric When Choosing Your Cooker

Remodelling a kitchen can be a lot of fun and sometimes a little bit stressful. If you plan well before hand how things are going to be laid out, what counter tops you want, the cabinetry, type of flooring and the appliances, everything will run quite a bit smoother. The only stress involved will be a month or so without having your kitchen available.

Making choices can be difficult when it comes to finding the right items for your new kitchen. If the kitchen is small, choosing light coloured cabinets and a light coloured floor will be advantageous in opening up the space. It is alright to have a dark colour, such as black to accent the light woods and floor when choosing your counter tops.

Adding new appliances is always fun when finishing off a newly fitted kitchen. Choosing a brand that is reputable and reliable is one of the first things to think about. If you want all the appliances to be matching in brands, there is a possibility that an appliance store might give you a discount if you buy your fridge, dishwasher and cooker from them and especially if they are all the same brand.

The decision to have a gas cooker or an electric cooker is the final step in the process. If you do not have a gas connection, well, it is apparent an electric cooker is the only option. If there is indeed a choice, what should you think about in making the decision?

Personal preference and previous experience will be the best guide however if only one kind has been used before, looking at differences at this juncture is prudent. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Running a gas cooker is less expensive than an electric cooker

  • Gas cookers offer instantaneous heat and an electric cooker takes time to generate heat

  • Gas ovens usually provide uneven heat where electric cookers spread the heat out evenly

  • Gas ovens must be installed professionally by a corgi certified plumber

  • It is easier to control the heat on a gas hob than an electric hob

  • An electric cooker will need a separate circuit

Finally you must decide if you want a stand alone or built in unit along with the size that is right for you.

At this point finding a contractor will be the last thing you need to do. Have several give you bids and also get referrals from previous customers. Make sure that they do not require all the funding up front and agree to pay it as it is completed. Always be very suspicious if any contractor wants all the money before starting a job. There are many people out there who are sitting like a cat waiting to pounce at the ideal situation to run a well laid plan for a scam.

Using a Professional Photographer Magazine to Find Good Camera Reviews

If you are a photographer, you probably know better than anyone else that the quality of your camera can greatly influence the success of your business. Even if you are just an amateur photographer who likes to snap a good shot every now and then for a hobby, you likely recognize the importance of having a good camera. Because photographic technology continues to expand and advance, especially with the rapid evolution of digital photography, having a good source of information on new trends, camera models, and technology advances would be ideal if you want to stay up to par with the ever-changing world of photography.

Where can I find this kind of information?

One of the best ways to stay up to date with the world of photography is to subscribe to a professional photographer magazine. There are several well-known magazines dealing with all things photographic, and these magazines can be either web-based ezines or physical magazines that will be sent to your mailbox after subscription. Within the professional photographer magazine you can find various reviews on brand new camera models as well as how-to articles and plenty of additional information pertaining to the world of photography that someone like yourself would enjoy to read.

These magazines may also provide access to a thriving community of professional and amateur photographers. With the advent of social networks and online forums, you will be able to connect to others who share your passion for photography. This will enable you to share your advice and knowledge while learning new things from others who have more experience than you do in photography. This will ultimately make it easier for you to improve your skills and keep up to date with new trends in photography.

Will this help me if I want to buy a new camera?

Absolutely. Photographer magazines often provide extensive reviews on various camera models including brands that are not as well-known or highly marketed. This source of information will be exceptionally valuable to you if you have been searching for a new camera but are unsure if it would be worth the amount of money you are prepared to invest in it. Professional photographer magazine reviews will help you to get a good idea of both the advantages and disadvantages of many different camera models, helping you to either make up your mind about purchasing or encouraging you to discard the offer in search of a better one.

In conclusion, if you are a photographer or just have a passion for the world of photography, you really can't go wrong with a subscription to a professional photographer magazine. Apart from the wealth of detailed and useful information available to you, you will often find plenty of additional entertainment that will lighten your day while keeping you well-informed.

Laminate Flooring for Every Area of the Home

Flooring is one of the most important choices you can make for your home, not only in terms of wear and tear, but also in aesthetic value. Floors have a habit of catching the eye as one enters a room for the first time. Therefore, your choice in flooring materials goes a long way in the first impression visitors get of your home. Not only that, but you have to live in the home every day. Floors that you love will make your living experience that much more enjoyable.

Thankfully, laminate flooring has come such a long way in the last few decades that almost any wood or stone material can be mimicked with a laminate. From the finest hard woods to the most beautiful natural stones, laminates offer a similar look and feel at a fraction of the cost. And you can find a good laminate flooring material for just about any room in your home.

Laminate Wood Products

Natural wood is a natural fit for dining rooms, conservatories, hallways, and bedrooms. If a deep mahogany is your preference, try an embossed mahogany laminate which mimics natural wood grain. Choose one with a patina finish for an extra measure of elegance. Mahogany laminates work well in rooms where elegance and tradition are the theme of the décor. Such rooms would include the conservatory, study, and library.

For bedrooms and hallways, a lighter maple or oak laminate may be a better choice. Their lighter colour will make these spaces seem larger and more inviting, aspects that are always welcoming to guests and residents alike. A smooth surface laminate is a good idea for the bedroom, but consider an embossed or matte finish for the hallway.

Stone Laminates

Laminate flooring that mimics natural stone makes a great statement in your home's entryway. Imagine the reaction you'll get from guests as they walk in the front door and step on what appears to be natural stone. The look and beauty of these laminates, combined with embossed textures, produce an amazingly accurate look and feel that can easily be mistaken for the real thing. The best part of a stone of laminate floor is that it doesn't require the extreme care that natural stone does.

Marble Laminates

Marble is a favourite material for bathrooms and kitchens because of its stunning beauty and unrivalled durability. Unfortunately, natural marble is very expensive. Yet with the digital imaging technology available today, marble can be mimicked in laminate flooring to such a high degree that it's difficult to tell the difference. A marble laminate with a high gloss surface provides the same stunning beauty as natural marble, yet at a much lower price.

Hunter Fleece Welly Socks inside Your Boots

Whether we like it or not, the approach of the Christmas holidays is a stark reminder to those of us in the northern hemisphere that winter is almost upon us. With the season come plenty of cold temperatures, snow or sleet, and icy roads and pavements. If you're someone who frequently walks outdoors, wintertime can be an unwelcome guest. But if you know how to dress, you can keep yourself warm even on the harshest of winter days. Dressing for winter weather is not difficult, it's just different.

Perspiration is designed to release heat from the body and keep a constant core temperature of 37°C. Believe it or not, the human body still perspires even when the air temperature dips below freezing. It may be indistinguishable, but it does occur. That same perspiration your body uses to regulate temperature is what makes you feel cold during the winter.

You can fight the perspiration, and the cold feeling it produces, by dressing in layers. It works because the layer closest to the skin absorbs perspiration while subsequent layers hold in body heat and cause the perspiration to evaporate. Without the layers, the single material touching the skin absorbs perspiration which is not easily evaporated by the cold air. And it is the perspiration remaining in contact with the skin makes us feel cold.

Even with boats, layers are essential. A pair of knee-high rubber boots for example, will be much warmer if you wear an extra pair of socks. Hunter Fleece Welly Socks are great for this type of thing. Again, your regular socks will absorb the perspiration while the fleece socks retain the heat and keep your feet warm. You need to realize however, that in order to achieve this you must purchase boots one or two sizes bigger than your normal shoes. Boots in the same size as your regular shoes will not allow the extra layer of socks and your feet will be prone to feeling cold.

One last thing about cold feet during the winter: external moisture is just as big an enemy as internal perspiration. If you walk through the snow or sleet in a pair of boots that are not waterproof, they might possibly soak through and leave your feet cold and wet. But if you keep your feet dry, you also keep them warm.

With winter fast approaching and Christmas on the doorstep, Hunter Welly Socks make a great gift idea for friends or loved ones. They even make a great gift for yourself if you're prone to cold feet. Just remember, the key to winter dressing is layers. If you remember that principle you'll be fine.

ISO 9001: The ‘OFSTED’ of the Business World?

Having made the leap from almost two decades working in education, to being my own small-business (small to the point of miniscule, in fact – it’s just me) I have now stumbled upon the fact that, at some stage, it may be incumbent upon me to aim for ISO 9001 certification, so that I can demonstrate that I work to a given standard and offer value for money to clients.

Hmm, call me cynical but if I start such a document-rich journey, am I not just swapping my OFSTED treadmill for a business-based one? Whilst I’m certainly not saying that it’s appropriate to have [internationally] recognised standards for business, what I am wondering is how much pay-off there will be for businesses in the long-run, once the ink has dried on what appears to be serious volumes of documentation? Moreover, with a worrying sense of déjà-vu, I’m concerned about how long it’s likely to be before some bright bureaucratic spark (an oxymoron if ever there was one) decides that such certification should be regulation within some business sectors, or even statutory across the board?

Surely anyone going into business already has objectives as set out in their business plans and always puts the greatest of consideration to what their enterprise offers in terms of the experience of the customer or client (equally across the short and long-term) both as part of the business plan and as basic common sense if you want your business to generate enough money to pay off the practically-prohibitive business loan and to keep you and the kids in socks through the winter?

In the current economic climate (yes, that old chestnut) is it not hard enough for those with a little enterprise and energy (and even less cash) to begin to stand on their own two feet in the world of business, without suddenly finding themselves without this season’s must have accessory, the ISO 9001? Whilst I can see its validity in marketing to the customer or prospective clients, how much will it help the next cap-in-hand visit to the bank manager or financier who has the final say on whether the small business survives or sinks without trace with no wall upon which to pin the spanking new certificate?

Finally, how closely does the ISO 9001 relate to the reality of the day to day business context? Of course, schools work hard across the years and, despite some very raw material to work with, can produce some extremely impressive outcomes whilst regularly jumping through their OFSTED hoops with the panache of circus puppies, but there is also a level of ‘as seen on the day’ that applies to inspections. Will the ISO 9001 be any better at eliminating this influence on certificate achievement, I wonder?
